Cryptolocker Prevention Kit
Posted by amy on 16 October 2013 11:59 PM

The SMBKitchen Crew and Third Tier staff have put together a group materials that were published as part of our SMBKitchen Project and only available to subscribers. However because this virus is spreading so rapidly and is so serious we’ve decided to make these materials available to everyone.

The kit includes an article on cleaning up after infection but more importantly provides materials and instruction for deploying preventative block using software restriction policies. The articles provide instruction for installing them via GPO on domain computers and terminal servers, and non-domain joined machines too. We have also provide GPO settings that you can important into your environment.

We’ve zipped it up into a single file. Download it now

If you find this kind of material useful considering joining the SMBKitchen Project. You can find out more about us at

UPDATE: There have been two recent updates to the kit. These are found on our blog. Please be sure that you subscribe to our blog for continued information on this topic. and All future updates will be posted to our blog and this post may not be updated.

SMBKitchen Project document update
Posted by amy on 02 April 2013 11:21 AM

The first two months of the SMBKitchen Project have flown by. And yes, I’m going to officially change the name of the project to the SMBKitchen Project since that seems to be what we are known by. So look for the change on our website. April 1 marks only 1/6 of our way through this 12 month project. Already we’ve got 200+ pages of material and several hours of chat, webinar and video. As I look across the content I’m seeing the beginnings of a group of materials that will form a cohesive vision of the future of consulting to SMB sized businesses. You probably see a hodge-podge of stuff. I promised that we were not writing a book, because books are too limiting. This is a project whose content streams out over the course of 12 months at the end of which will be a roadmap of technical education, consulting and in-the-know tips that put you over the top of the competition. That’s our goal.

In April we’ll be adding materials focused on Hyper-V, backup, Exchange and MultiPoint.

If you haven’t joined us yet. It’s time to do so. So go to, create an account, purchase a subscription and we’ll see you at the next webinar or chat.

Here’s a list of current materials.

The Enterprise Solutions for SMB project has been underway for a full week and we’re off to a flying start. Here’s what we’ve accomplished so far and what’s coming up soon.

Upcoming Events

February 13th Chat with the SMBKitchen Crew: Please join us for a chat with the authors of the Enterprise Solutions for SMB authors. Collectively we call them the SMBKitchen Crew so join us in the Kitchen for a chat about recently released content.

February 28th In The Know about The Future of Desktop Computing with Intel and Equus: Intel and Equus will join us for an In the Know webinar. Recently Intel announced its decision to exit the desktop market and will phase out desktop system boards over the next three years. What did the crystal ball predict to cause Intel to make this decision? Following that announcement Infotel, a large system builder, announced that it will stop building desktop computers. Can other builders be far behind? Equus, one of the Country’s largest Intel system builders joins us to inform us on how Intel’s decision affects them and how they see the system builder community reacting.

March 6th In The Know about Office 365 Subscriptions with Robert Crane: Whether we like it or not the future of Microsoft applications are subscriptions. Office 365 is the means by which our clients will obtain these applications and Microsoft has just expanded the range of subscriptions dramatically and the ways in which they can be purchased. It’s now nearly as confusing as the rest of Microsoft licensing, a sure sign of maturity at Microsoft. Robert Crane, Office 365 MVP, joins us to explain these options from a small business perspective. Which ones make the most sense for small enterprises? Which packages hold the best opportunities for small business focused IT firms?

Susan Bradley Contribution to “the Project”
Posted by amy on 05 February 2013 01:12 PM

Susan Bradley, one of our SMBKitchen members,  is contributing critical patching information to the Enterprise Solutions for SMB project. She will be adding a continuous stream of patching tips, tricks, and alerts to keep you “in the know” about security.

You may recognize the names of most of our crew. They are 7 MVP’s and small business IT experts. Instead of writing another book we created this project and are making it available by subscription. Learn about our other crew members and get signed up.

So far Susan has shown us how to:

  • Block IE 10 from installation
  • Install Java 7.13
  • Use Microsoft’s security tool EMET to protect sensitive computers from zero-day attacks

And she’s produced this short video to show us all what she has planned for the coming year. She’s going to enable us to say no to patches.

Learn to say NO to patches

That’s just this week and just from Susan Bradley. Imagine a whole year’s worth of great information from 7 great small business focused IT Professionals. Now imagine yourself ahead of the curve.
